The Man Behind The Photo, My Dad Arthur L. Benjamin.img118

This summer as we waited out Tropical Storm Hermine in my family’s home in Florida the roof started leaking and the water began to rise over the dock out back — a sudden panic set in. My dad’s photos were up in the closet not far from the dripping water that was coming down in the living room. When the rain stopped and we began to get back to some sort of normalcy I only had a couple of days left before we were returning to New York. My instinct was to take everything with me, but they don’t belong to me. They belong to our family, so I frantically started scanning and taking photos of what I could and beating myself up for not doing it earlier in the summer when I had time. Miraculously with the Florida humidity the photos are mold free and the negatives intact. I’m now on a mission to archive and preserve them and have them exhibited somewhere. I found many on the Library of Congress Website and the one below on The Getty Images Website and without knowing where else to start I’ve created an album on Flickr. Please take a minute to check out these fascinating photos that capture a time and place in history.

Mystery Photos.

This summer while going through family photos I came across these two mystery ones.  I have no idea who the woman and the baby are.  We were having fun trying to figure out when they were taken from the bathing suits.  1950’s? What do you think.

The Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge, Look-Up.

Look Up.

I can’t imagine not looking up in a city like New York where your life literally can depend on it.  A year ago, tragically a baby was killed by a falling brick from the crumbling building facade eight stories above from where her grandmother sat with her on a bench. There are too many of these stories in recent years. Fallen cranes, branches in Central Park etc. I never take for granted the dangers that do exist from above and try my best to remain aware of my surroundings at all times, that said there is also incredible beauty in the architecture here. I took this photo of The Ansonia yesterday  with my iphone.IMG_3841

Legendary New York Time’s Fashion Photographer Bill Cunningham died this week. The Washington Post called him the modern era’s original street style photographer. My own feeble attempt to try and capture someone in action on the streets of New York makes me appreciate how effortless he made his work appear. The other night walking home from the Met on 5th avenue I followed a few couples, all 70 and older in their stylish clothes, 2 of the couples hand in hand making me wonder and curious while filling in the blanks in my mind of how they’ve been able to keep their relationships so strong.  Were these second marriages?  Was it the obvious wealth they had that freed them from the day to day stress most of my friends and I have in our lives.  Was it making sure they took this time every week to be together? Was it that at their age they could stop and really appreciate and enjoy their lives without the care of kids, school and work? I guess if I hadn’t been daydreaming so much I might have grabbed my phone to capture a picture quicker.  When I decided to turn back the others were gone and these two with their woven hats were already getting into a taxi they had flagged down.

Where Am I?
