Always honor those that came before.  I can’t think of a better person to celebrate for black history month than Virginia Hamilton.

Black History Month is when we reflect, remember and honor important African Americans. For anyone with children, America’s most honored author of children’s literature, Virginia Hamilton is one.

Native daughter of Yellow Springs, OH. Winner of The Edgar Allen Poe Award, The John Newbery Medal, The Hans Christian Andersen Medal for the body of her work, The MacArthur Fellowship (Genius Award and the first children’s author ever), The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, The Coretta Scott King Book Award and The Library of Congress Best Books for Children just to name a few. She was the most decorated author in children’s literature of any race or gender and created the The Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Children when these terms didn’t exist. Incredible artist and trail blazer I salute you this month, black history month and every month because you aren’t just part of black history, but are a part of American history – Leigh Hamilton

“I love my home town, I live on land that has been in my family for generations. And being an Ohioan means that for me, there is nothing quite like an Ohio sky, unless it would be the beauty of an Ohio sunset.” – Virginia Hamilton
